Research:
Homeownership
A
substantial segment of the Joint Center's core research focuses
on homeownership trends, the economics and demo-graphics of homeownership,
and the policies that affect the nation's homeowners.
As
part of the Joint Center's ongoing research into home- ownership
issues, the Center, with support from the Ford Foundation, Freddie
Mac, and the Research Institute for Housing America, convened
a major symposium of housing experts that explored characteristics
of home-ownership by low-income individuals and in low-income
areas. Papers commissioned for the symposium, which took place
in the Fall of 2000, confront a variety of issues at the forefront
of housing research including the impact of homebuyer counseling,
the role in income and wealth constraints to homeownership, and
the expected returns to investments in low-cost housing. The papers
have also been collected for publication by the Brookings Institution
Press in a book to be released in Spring 2002.
The
Center has also published papers on important home-ownership trends
and issues including minority homeownership, education levels
and homeownership, immigration and homeownership, second homes,
and homeownership and social capital.
In
addition, the Center also produces periodic reports on home- ownership
rates and household formation projections.
